I want to start with a complete definition of creationism, then intelligent design, and then the explanation of the theory of evolution. (including concepts that go beyond Darwin such as punctuated equilibrium, genetic drift, gene flow and speciation. We are labeled Darwinians throughout the film and what Stein and crew don't realize is we are way beyond Darwin.... I hear the movie doesn't have any science and doesn't define ID until a half hour into the film. We can do better. Yes, we will see the film but after opening weekend. I don't want to inflate their numbers...
More topics which are not in any particular order:
I saw that the audience in Ben's speech had paid stand ins rather than students which is what it suggested.. In otherwords, they couldn't get the students to volunteer because most accepted evolution. Michael Schermer wrote about this...
They lied about to Michael Schermer, Richard Dawkins, PZ Meyers, and Eugineie Scott- using the title cross roads and who the backers were... (They already had expelled the movie's domain name registered).
They most likely stole the only cool part of the film which is an an cool animation. See it. We need to watch how this unfolds.
The wedge document... (we will show part of it and how this relates to the whole motivation of the religious right)
The dover trial will be brought up and the true meaning of the decision.
(The local angle) We will go deep into the Mark Souder's involvement with the discover institutes and breaching of peer review... (Agno- I want your help here since you are familiar with him).
Pamela Winnick who wrote "A Jealous God; Science's Crusade against Religion" should be discussed, too. I read part of her book after I saw it on the shelf at the library and took it home. (I like to see what they say and I had no idea she was in the movie. Apparently the film doesn't mention her book.) Everything was related to NAzi or abortion throughout the book and runs right back to the wedge document. Isn't it funny how the relgious folks use religious words to describe secular ideas, such as church of liberalism, church of Darwin, crusade against religion? Anyway, she is hardly an unbiased person to interview for a film about scientists...
False dichotomy- Evolution does not require one to lose their faith in God... Ken Miller, Francis Collins, and many clergy and dominations accept evolution...
(Maybe we should start with this one... So religious folks don't change the channel...) Isn't lying against Jesus's teachings anyway...
The biggest outrage is saying Darwin is necessary for the Holocaust and Stalin systematic killing machines.... How should we approach this one? Luther was antisemitic. The pogrom and killing was around long before Hitler. Religion set up the racism to begin with... Hitler was raised Catholic and the Nazi belt buckles were religious... Isn't the cause the Nazi's god chosen race ideology... If Hitler was an atheist then why throw Freud's books such as "The Future of an Illusion" in the fire. Freud was big into evolution. There is so much more here. I am just throwing out ideas... Darwin is all about variation so race isn't that important and chances for survival are better to interbred races for the best survival, instead of try to use "artificial selection" which was used long before Darwin in crops, cattle, dogs and pigeon breeding, etc.
(Stein does know that the Stalinists rejected the theory of evolution as a biological rendition of capitalism, doesn't he? And that they replaced it with their own ideologically driven, disastrous theory of Lysenkoism? Does Stein think that moviegoers won't know this?)
Social Darwinism has been used by many ideology's including some the religious right for cut throat capitalism and imperialism... Evolution is our history. You don't derive an ought from an is... etc. Social Darwinism is wrong and nobody is pushing for it here..
Keep adding ideas, on this thread...
Thanks,
Andy
