What would be an appropriate Mission Statement for the group

Posts: 139 05/11/08 12:19:39	I am holding this up for good reasons. I care and I think it can be better. I think we are close and these statements are very good. If we are going to keep it short then we should consider removing the obvious like "member based or community based". (It is in the name for crying out loud). More importantly, I want to add skepticism and wonder of science included in the mission some how.... I am going to tweak a little and get back to you today.... Stay tuned... Freethought Fort Wayne is a community-based organization affiliated with the Center For Inquiry Indiana. Freethought Fort Wayne offers individuals in the greater Fort Wayne, Indiana area promotion and discussion of enlightenment principles such as the joy of science, skepticism, reason, literacy, altruism, and civil liberties. We provide an ethical alternative to supernatural and paranormal worldviews and will join cause with other organizations that seek to defend civil rights, keep religion and pseudoscience out of government, and educate our society in critical and scientific thinking. Freethought is a philosophical viewpoint that holds that beliefs should be formed on the basis of science and logic and not be influenced by emotion, authority, tradition, or any dogma My reasoning for the changes: This one is short and "Join together and put principles into practice, postive change into society "are all implicit of any mission statement. They would work on Jesus websites and are generic. Yes, I am criticizing CFI indy's statement... "A positive change in society" is subjective. I don't think most people would agree with our actual goals as positive.... (I am trying to focus more on reason rather than trying to slip in a atheist utopia.) Let's show what we stand for rather than just positive fluff! (Enlightenment principles keep it positive yet provide significant meaning- including implicitly leaving superstition and supernatural). This rewrite is more specific and incorporates all those points plus, we can say will work with other organizations and our commitment to science vs religion and junk science. I am able to get joy of science, skepticism and enlightenment in. Yes, there is a tie to the show, too. That wasn't an accident and the community based line is growing on me. I like this one very much. I just swapped community-based with local non-profit since we mention greater fort wayne area in the next sentence. I didn't like "cosmic" world-view and thought it unnecessary. It is misleading. Everything else is spot on.

I'm not a lawyer, but there may be legal implications to using the phrase "non-profit organization" without having formally filed a 501(c)(3). I do think that achieving 501(c)(3) status is a worthwhile goal, and it gives us the ability to collect money tax-free and seek grants, but using that phrase right now is perhaps misleading. And perhaps I'm being a tad too nitpicky here.
