Plus any suggestions would be good, I don't really know what you can and cannot put in these things, but I can find out. I'll bring this up at the meeting as well.

Care package for our atheist in a foxhole |

My wife had a good idea. What would the group think about creating a care package to send to our own atheist in a foxhole. I don't know him but I believe
Mighty (and Narly?) know him. We would need his full name and where to send the package as well.

What a thoughtful wife you have.
I'm willing to participate on one condition: We put together care packages for everyone that we know who is serving. I'm quite sure that being away from one's 'normal' life sucks no matter what one's belief system is. Of the war biographies that I've read/watched, one item that I've heard repeatedly is that it's the mundane details of family life that are most appreciated (e.g. Sally was late to school last Wednesday.) I don't know the personal life of anyone serving, so I wouldn't be much help there, but I'd be willing to fund the purchase of material items. I imagine no food items would be allowed (melting, spoilage, etc.), but maybe something like the Sunday comics, a DVD, a book, or toilet paper could be sent. Hopefully someone who knows more about such things will chime in with a list of allowable items.

I'm pretty sure there are resources out there that will have a list of "forbidden" and "much appreciated" items. I suggested the one
that I know of just becuase I figured it would be easier to "get behind" one person than to create a whole list of people, at least at first. If we
get a good response we can expand the idea to a "soldier of the month" thing. Just kicking ideas.

I like this idea. I know about a bazillion people in the military, being from Norfolk, VA, I can get some suggestions for a care package. we need to know a
little more about him first though I think, so it can be more personal.
I did send cookies to Bosnia for someone I was dating once, they arrived fine....not sure if things have changed, also the climate is different, so who knows... Anyway- anyone who knows him, post away. Rose :)

Fellow Thinkers,
Found the following on http://www.lettersfromhomeprogram.org/ Just some suggestions you might use. Also, take a picture of your group at the next meeting to include. Maybe a note about the discussion. Would it be possible to get a mailing address of someone there so that I could send something to help out, as I will rarely get to a meeting? (Don't know if you have a policy about this). Hope you follow through on your plan. As much as I detest this war, I love our people over there. 1. Something to Eat -ie: granola bars; jerky, nuts, candy, snacks and gum and tuna in packet not in cans; anything individually wrapped and nutritional that they can pick up and put in their pocket and go 2. Something to Drink: ie: crystal light on the go packets; again
anything individually wrapped . 3. Something personal: ie; phone cards, international only - socks; playing cards; puzzle books; nerf balls, cd's dvd's, yoyo's small toys; beanies; sunglasses, body wash, Gillette "Fusion" blades, shaving cream in tubes not aerosol cans, fly traps, mouse traps, zip ties and socks, dental floss, lip balm, 4. Phone Cards- International It is usually better to make monetary donations earmarked for phone cards as the program gets them at a competitive rate through the Army exchange.
Please remember we DO NOT send liquids or aerosols, if they leak they ruin the entire package. Reminder: Currently Letters From Home is not sending magazines or books to our troops overseas. We also always are in need of sturdy sandwich size and snack size zip lock bags to package the items in. Also keep in mind, when making your cards of support, the soldiers don't like glitter all over the cards as it makes a mess in shipping. But please, remember to a man/woman overseas a LETTER FROM HOME is worth a million dollars. There is nothing better.. |
