Posts: 1 09/22/08 11:39:31	Tags : None I was thinking of contributing an article about being an atheist and a "God"mother. I am the Godmother of my sister's son (my nephew). First, does anyone think this would make an interesting article? Second, I would appreciate some ideas for such things as what I should ask my sister about having an atheist as the Godmother of her child. Should I write it as an interview type discussion between my sister and myself? Should I focus on how I felt taking an oath in a church to help my nephew learn about Jesus? What are your thoughts in teaching spirituality without God or superstitions? Just an idea. Would like to know what people think. Rae

If you want to publish it under your own name then sign up at Wordpress.com and then send me the email address you registered under and I'll add you as an author. If you want it published but dont' want to do it under yourself/under your account, then send it me in an email and I'll submit it as "The following article was written by a FreeThought Fort Wayner" or something like it. As for content that's a good question. I would personally like to know how you personally reconciled the "Yes I will teach the kid about Jesus" with your beliefs (perhaps you plan on guiding him in his walk with Jesus, although my impression is that at a minimum your guidance isn't probably what the church has in mind ;) What were your sister's thoughts, does she know you don't blieve in the whole Jesus thing (I'm again assuming youdon't), if she doesn't do you feel like you've been deceptive or worry about being perceived that way. If she does know, what were her thoughts on possibly putting you in an uncomfortable situation, did she do it out of obligation. I don't know I'm just rambling things off. Maybe you do the interview then afterwards decide whether the interview is sufficient or it may be apparent that you can draw from the interview with selective quotes. Will this be an article about "being an atheist and a 'God'mother" or will it be an article about "my sister ... having an atheist as the Godmother"? You should probably define what 'godmother' means to you and/or your sister. Like so many words, everyone has their own definition. Did your sister know you were an atheist before she asked? Did the preacher? Did the congregation? Why or why not? How do you define the responsibilities of being a Godmother given that you are an atheist? What advice would you give to other atheists in your position? Should I write it as an interview type discussion between my sister and myself? You will be the one writing the article, so that's up to you. If you decide on an interview format, the article will be more your sister's than your own, since she will be the one answering the questions. It would be polite to get her consent before posting her answers on the web. If you wrote it yourself, you wouldn't have to worry about that. Should I focus on how I felt taking an oath in a church to help my nephew learn about Jesus? Let me play pop-psychologist and suggest that this is something that you are wanting to talk about, but are looking for "permission". If that's the case, feel free. What are your thoughts in teaching spirituality without God or superstitions? It makes about as much sense as putting your socks on before your shoes.

There will always be people who do and don't. What's important is if it is something you will like and enjoy doing. And you might be surprised. There are a few people here who like my ramblings, so there's hope for anyone! I know it sounds interesting enough that I'll read it.

Posts: 75 09/24/08 02:26:46	Is it wrong to make a comment just cause? I've often had this thought my self because many of my friends are having babies and allot of people in general are religious. I recently told a good friend I would be their babies GOD father if they had one. But I said it in a sense of looking after the child if need be. I've always had the view that a GOD parents responsibility was the people/person responsible in worst case scenarios to look after the child's well being. By your comment I see it's more then that. And a way for the church to proliferate in spite of horrible life situations. VULTURES! Often parents are killed in wars or car accidents etc and no living relatives are out there to watch over the child. Well, about your dilemma, I would certainly write about it. I think any incite might help a person down the road with their own issue like yours. It's not what you believe but what you believe to believe in.
