Please post discussion here on a revision to the Constitution / Bylaws to include an Audit Committee for the organization. The purpose of this committee would
be to ensure that all necessary accounting practices are followed to the fullest extent of all applicable laws and regulations.

I think it is a mistake at this point to write any standing committees into either the constitution or bylaws. As I remember it, the concern expressed during
the planning meetings was that we simply don't know what we're going to need as of right now, so what we wrote into the constitution was a method by
which we could add to the bylaws later as the group evolved and its' needs became more apparent.
As far as the idea of an audit committee in general, it may well be a good thing in the future. Especially if we choose to become a 501(c)(3). But again, right now, we're small. I think the idea to keep open books, setting some discretionary spending limit and then requiring authorization to exceed it, as well as having the treasurer read a brief statement of accounts at each meeting assures members that their dues and donations are being managed appropriately. I fear too much bureaucracy at this stage will cause the group to stagnate then wither. |

We need to avoid too much bureaucracy, but I like the idea of preparing, in the constitution, for growth, including possibly adding some offices like an
internal/external VP, executive board, or some such, that don't necessarily have to be filled right away. At the least, we need to make sure that the
president is elevated above day-to-day operations; as Rae said, committee chairs should report to, and be governed by, the appropriate VP. It could be an
impediment to attracting creative leadership talent for the president's office if we create the impression they'll be preparing mundane agendas and
whatnot.
Also, list ensuring that a quarterly audit gets done as a responsibility of the VP. |
